It’s beneficial for your body and general well-being. What is Emmer? Emmer is one of the oldest grains known to man. Wild emmer was found at Ohalo II, a famous archaeological site, located on the southwest shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel’s Rift Valley. The grains have been dated back to 17 000 BC. It was popular in Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, where it served as the main wheat, and along with barley it became the primary ingredient in bread and beer. In ancient Israel emmer was one of the five grains used during Passover. Widely used in Greece and northeastern Europe, it was called adoreum (“glory”) because emmer was held in glory at that time. Now it’s cultivated and known mostly in mountainous areas in Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Germany, Poland, Armenia, Morocco, Czech and Slovak, and some areas of the US and Ethiopia. It’s a strong crop, able to deliver good yields on poor soil. Well known for it’s healing properties, it’s used as a food and also as a filler for pillows and mattresses.
